All positions are temporary until completion of probation.

Position Summary:

Situated in the family home, the Child Care Provider takes direction from the House Leader to provide support and services to the primary caregiver(s) and children. This role is accountable to establish rapport and trust with the primary caregiver(s) and to develop and provide children with a safe and caring environment to foster their learning and growth. Responsibilities also include providing age-appropriate activities and programs, handling behavioral or related issues, helping to provide nutritious meals and snacks and ensuring the home and play areas are safe, clean and well-maintained.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Learns the case plan for the primary caregiver(s) and, more specifically, the children; ensures the plan is followed and records all matters relating to the plan or the provision of child care are documented; reads previous shift documentation to familiarize self with any items requiring attention. Ensures all programming, appointments, medications, visits, reminders and any other matters are documented.
  • Establishes and maintains interpersonal, trusting and supportive relationships with parents and children.
  • Provides children with age-appropriate activities and programs; accompanies children on outings (e.g. library, splash park, etc) and involves children in a variety of other activities in support of their learning, growth and play (e.g. baking, planting flowers, reading, games, etc); includes the primary caregiver(s) in these activities.
  • In conjunction with the primary caregiver(s), assists with preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks for the children; ensures food handling and storage follows appropriate safety guidelines.
  • Participates with the primary caregivers in pre-bedtime, napping and/or wake-up activities, ensuring children follow a schedule.
  • Provides support to the primary caregiver(s) to ensure all hygiene and cleanliness items are attended to with the children (e.g. bathing, brushing teeth, washing hair, etc).
  • Accompanies children to school as appropriate; assists the primary caregiver(s) with helping the children to complete homework or school projects.
  • Assists the primary caregiver(s) with safely administering and monitoring medications for children; monitors health and brings concerns forward.
  • Assists with handling injuries incurred by children; accompanies and/or takes the child to the doctor/emergency or calls 911; may stay with child at the hospital if required; completes an injury report and notifies management immediately.
  • Monitors behavioral issues and responds appropriately ensuring the child and other children are safe; calls crisis team members and/or additional resources as appropriate.
  • Attends staff meetings and participates in safety related initiatives to ensure the safety of the children and team; follows all safety protocols.
  • Adheres to all internal policies and procedures; attends required training.
  • Works with the primary caregiver(s) to clean and sanitize the home, perform general house/yard maintenance (e.g. shovels snow, mows/waters lawn etc), laundry.
  • Ensures the House Leader is kept apprised of all issues related to the children’s well-being and safety and other matters.
  • Completes ad hoc or regular reports (e.g. in-home visit reports, incident reports, daily log books).
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy of child/family information.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Formal Education

Completion of development courses or post-secondary education relevant to this role is a requirement (e.g. Early Childhood Education, crisis/risk management, etc).

Certifications/Training/Associations

CPR/First Aid is required. Individuals must attend required training upon commencement (e.g. OH&S, etc).

Licenses

A valid driver’s license is necessary.

Experience

Must have three (3) years successful experience working with individuals who have unique behavioral issues/backgrounds or special needs.

Knowledge

Knowledge of behavioral issues specific to children, underlying causes, and how to respond effectively
Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous history and culture
Knowledge of safe working practices, proper hygiene/cleanliness/nutrition
Knowledge of internal policies, procedures and protocols

Skills

Computer skills (e.g. laptop, e-mail, MSOffice)
Writing, spelling, grammar, sentence structure

Working Conditions:
